A mid-air collision between two light planes in southwest Sydney has resulted in the death of one pilot, while a second pilot managed to make a miraculous emergency landing.
Emergency services were called to the vicinity of Napperfield Airfield in Wedderburn, near Appin, just before midday following reports of a crash. Authorities confirmed that two aircraft collided in the air. One of the planes subsequently crashed into dense bushland.
Rescue crews located the wreckage and discovered the body of the pilot, who is believed to have been the sole occupant.
In a fortunate turn of events, the second aircraft involved in the collision remained airworthy enough to return to the airfield. That pilot landed safely and reportedly suffered no injuries.
The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) has launched a full investigation into the cause of the disaster. Police are urging locals to avoid the area while recovery operations continue and are asking any witnesses to come forward.
